Islamic World to Continue Supporting Azerbaijan in Karabakh Conflict – Afghan Envoy

Published: 11-27-2017

The Islamic world will continue supporting Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Mohammad Taqi Khalili, ambassador of Afghanistan to Azerbaijan, said at a press conference in Baku Nov. 27.

Since the first days of the conflict, Afghanistan has shared a common stance with Azerbaijan within the framework of various international organizations, he said.

Afghanistan acts against international terrorism and condemns any kind of terror, the ambassador added.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
