Belgrade and Baku enjoy mutual understanding in politics and are strategic partners, Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremovic has said.
“We support and will support Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity," Jeremic told a joint press conference in Baku with his Azerbaijani counterpart, Elmar Mammadyarov, on Thursday. He was referring to the conflict with Armenia over the Azerbaijani territory of Nagorno-Karabakh.
"Conflicts should be resolved with the observance of the norms of international law. Both our states support the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty set out in the UN Charter and Helsinki Final Act. Serbia's position on this is one of principle and we have no intention of giving it up," Jeremic said.
Serbia is interested in developing relations with Azerbaijan, the minister continued, promising that 2011-12 would be a period of increased cooperation between the two countries.
"I discussed this issue with President Ilham Aliyev today. Serbia is interested in investing in the development of infrastructure in Azerbaijan. Our countries intend to implement a major road project. Serbia is also planning to invest in the development of strategic industry."
The minister added that Serbia was interested in a variety of cultural and sporting ties between the two countries.
For his part, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov praised bilateral relations.
"My counterpart came to Baku with a variety of proposals on projects in energy, infrastructure, banking and road construction," he said.
The ministers said that agreement had been reached on holding Azerbaijani Culture Days in Serbia and Serbian culture days in Azerbaijan.
