'Karabakh Settlement Must Bear No Reference To Armenia-Turkey Rapprochement'

Expert doesn’t exclude Armenia-Turkey protocols annulment.

Turkologist Ruben Melkonyan does not rule out annulment of Armenia-Turkey protocols following the stalemate bilateral ties have long been facing.

“I don’t believe Armenia will be surprised over the development of events described,” the expert told a news conference in Yerevan. “The issue might well be included on Armenia’s agenda. If, despite the efforts taken, the rapprochement fails, no international organization will believe in Turkey’s intention to normalize ties with Armenia,” Melkonyan said.

However, the expert did not exclude Turkey’s attempt to involve the two countries’ publics in rapprochement, should all political efforts prove ineffective.

Commenting on possible influence of Karabakh settlement on the success of Armenian-Turkish normalization, the expert noted, “Karabakh settlement, similarly to Cyprus issue must bear no reference to Armenia-Turkey rapprochement.”
