Armenian oppositional parliamentary groups offer to remove the Armenian-Turkish protocols from the agenda.
If the Turkish parliament removed the protocols, National Assembly can do the same, said head of standing committee on foreign relations Armen Rustamyan. “We can not only suspend the process but remove the documents from the agenda. Naturally, president is following the process but we can make recommendations,” said Rustamyan, MP from ARF Dashnaktsutyun.
MP from Heritage Party Armen Martirosyan said Ankara had showed that it had no intention to ratify the protocols and the Armenian side should respond adequately.
Commenting on the initiative, Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan said the opinions would be taken into consideration.
In October 2009 Armenia and Turkey signed protocols in Zurich to normalize diplomatic relations between the states. The documents had to be ratified in both countries’ parliaments. However, in 2010 the Armenian president suspended the process. Ankara set preconditions and linked the reconciliation process to resolution of the Karabakh conflict.
Turkey decided to remove the protocols from parliament’s agenda this August.
