OIC Rejects So-Called Elections in Occupied Karabakh Region Of Azerbaijan

The Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu has expressed the OIC’s rejection of the so-called “elections” to the “local self-governing bodies” took place in the occupied Nagorno-Karabakh region of the Republic of Azerbaijan on September 18, 2011.


While reiterating the OIC’s principled position in fully recognizing the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Secretary General has stated that the recent elections in Nagorno-Karabakh gravely violate relevant norms and principles of international law and therefore have no legal effect.

The Secretary General also emphasized on the OIC’s continuous support to the efforts made by the Republic of Azerbaijan towards a peaceful solution to the territory issue on the basis of the relevant international resolutions.
