Russia is not interested in settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh problem, because it can thus retain its influence on both Armenia and Azerbaijan, Stepan Grigoryan, Board Chairman, Analytical Centre on Globalization and Regional Cooperation (ACGRC), told journalists Sept. 22.
Responding Tert.am's question on possible developments in the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process, with Azerbaijan and Armenia entering the election stage, the expert said, "No serious changes can be expected in the near future. Yes, we are entering the election stage."
"I think that the negotiations are often thwarted when different forces try, time and again, to speed up resolution of the problem. It is clear in the case of Azerbaijan, but I could not understand Dmitri Medvedev's reasons for doing so. May be, it is elections. Speeding up will always worsen the situation on the line of contact, as well as at the negotiations and in the South Caucasus as a whole," Grigoryan said. Moreover, attempts to speed up the process caused the conflicting parties to take harder lines, which was logical.
