Two Azerbaijani Soldiers Killed On Front Line

E-mail Print PDF

Major exchanges of fire have occurred along the front line separating Armenian and Azerbaijani forces with loss of life on both sides.

Two Azerbaijani soldiers were killed in separate incidents on 5 October, the Azerbaijani Defence Ministry's deputy press secretary, Capt Teymur Abdullayev, told APA.

Novruz Garyagdi oglu Aliyev, 20, was killed when the ceasefire was broken in Tartar District, while Suleyman Abbas oglu Asgarov, 22, was killed in Tovuz District.

The Azerbaijani spokesman said Armenian forces had broken the ceasefire in several places along the contact line, provoking response fire from the Azerbaijani side. The Azerbaijani army killed several soldiers on the Armenian side during retaliatory fire, Abdullayev said.

The defence ministry of separatist Karabakh said that one soldier, Yuri Sargsyan, 24, had been shot and killed in eastern Karabakh on 5 October.

The Armenian Defence Ministry's press spokesman, Davit Karapetyan, told News.am that two Armenian conscripts had been wounded by sniper fire near Chinari village in Tavush District on Wednesday, across the contact line from Azerbaijan's Tovuz District. He named the wounded as Henrik Khachatryan and Khachatur Sukiasyan, both born in 1992.

Karapetyan said that it was Azerbaijani and not Armenian forces that had fired first.

Azerbaijani military sources told APA that the Armenian side had incurred even larger losses than those reported.

Exchanges of fire along the contact line have been occurring almost daily in recent weeks.

Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a cease-fire in their war over Nagorno-Karabakh in 1994, but no permanent peace deal has yet been reached. A contact line separates the forces on both sides.

The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, the international body mediating a settlement to the conflict, have set strengthening the cease-fire as one of their objectives for the coming months.
