The Senate confirmed US ambassador to Turkey Francis Ricciardone, Jr. in a voice vote Tuesday evening.
The action came a day after the Senate confirmed US envoy to Syria Robert Ford by unanimous consent.
Both Ricciardone and Ford had been recess-appointed to the ambassadorships by President Obama last December, following months of their nominations being stalled by Republicans.
Ricciardone, a fluent Turkish-speaker and career diplomat, previously served as US ambassador to Egypt, ambassador to the Philippines, deputy US ambassador in Afghanistan, and in two earlier tours in Turkey, including as deputy chief of mission and charge d'affaires.
The Turkish Coalition of America extends its congratulations to Francis Ricciardone, the current United States Ambassador to Turkey, who has been appointed to serve a full diplomatic term in Ankara.
“Ambassador Ricciardone has worked tirelessly to strengthen one of America’s most important bilateral partnerships during a time of global unrest," said G. Lincoln McCurdy, TCA President.
“We welcome the Senate's decision to confirm Ambassador Ricciardone. Turkey is a critical nation in a region that is undergoing monumental changes. A strong US-Turkey relationship serves to steer us through these turbulent times, and the continued service of a highly qualified American diplomat is of significant importance.”
