Sarkozy May Broker Next Meeting Between Armenian, Azerbaijani Leaders

French President Nicolas Sarkozy may broker the next round of talks between the Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders, according to the Russian newspaper Nezavisimaya Gazeta.

Citing Azerbaijani sources, the paper says such proposal was made in the course of Sarkozy's visit to the South Caucasus region and later received the Russian and US presidents' approval.

Speaking to the Russian publication, an official representative of the Armenian Foreign Ministry denied the report.

"Azerbaijan has been recently demonstrating a strange behavior," the source was quoted as saying.

"Speaking of the Azerbaijanis' strange behavior, the Armenian diplomat meant the ANS Press agency's report saying that the Azerbaijani side is constructing a 3 km wall along the Contact Line," says the paper.

It further quotes a representative of Nagorno-Karabakh's Defense Army as saying that the withdrawal the Azerbaijani snipers from the Contact Line would cost the country less money.

"They ignore the co-chairs' calls and fail to do that. And we have no other choice but to respond to gunshots similarly. Anyway, they have oil dollars and can build a wall if they want to," the Defense Army official told the paper.

ANS Press had earlier said that Baku is planning to build a defense wall on the Contact Line between Nagorno-Karabakh and Azerbaijan. The construction reportedly began in Aghdam region. The wall, expected to shield the residents of border regions from what is claimed to be the enemies bullets will be 3m high and 2,700m long.
