Nicolas Sarkozy seems to seek support of the Armenian diaspora in France ahead of next year's presidential elections by sending a letter to Sargsyan.
The statement came from deputy chairman of the security and defense committee of the Azerbaijani Parliament Aydin Mirzazade.
In his letter to Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan following his visit to the South Caucasus, Nicolas Sarkozy assured the Armenian leader that France will always stand by Armenia in solving challenges facing the country and particularly Nagorno-Karabakh conflict through negotiations.
Sarkozy also touched on his visit to a monument to the so-called “Armenian genocide” as part of his visit to Armenia noting that the most exciting moment was his visit to Genocide Memorial Complex and the feeling he experienced while paying a tribute to memories of the victims of the murder verdict made on 24 April, 1915.
“Make sure that France will not retreat from its obligations until the successors of those who committed this plunder against your nation admit this,” Sarkozy says in his letter.
However, France does not seem to support Armenia in the issue of occupation of Azerbaijani lands in the letter, Mirzazade added.
“So, let Armenia not be happy about the letter.”
Standing by Armenia does not mean to support aggressive policy of this country, the MP noted.
“If Armenia loses its statehood, faces economic downturn and population leaves the country because of country’s tough stance in the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, France’s support for this country does not make any sense in this case.”
As one of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs, France needs to be neutral and have the same attitude towards conflicting sides, the MP stated.
