Church On Akhtamar Island Suffers From Earthquake

E-mail Print PDF

The earthquake in southeastern Turkey has reportedly caused damage to the Surb Khach (holy cross) church on Akhtamar island.

According to the Turkish newspaper Zaman, the dome of the church developed a crack after the powerful earthquake hit the province of Van on Sunday.

The Turkish authorities undertook the renovation of Holy Cross in 2007, but Ankara allowed holy masses there only three years after its reopening as a museum. A cross was affixed at the top of the church ten days after the first mass last September.
