Armenian President Blames Azerbaijan For Deaths Along Contact Line

Serzh Sargsyan has said the situation along the Armenian-Azerbaijani "border" will remain volatile until the Karabakh conflict is resolved.

He made the remarks at a press briefing, commenting on the deaths of two Armenian soldiers in exchanges of fire along the contact line.

“As long as the problem is unresolved, the border will always be volatile. But we do not want this volatility to cause loss of life," Sargsyan said, according to News.am.

Most of the contact line separating Armenian and Azerbaijani troops does not run along the border between the two countries but through Azerbaijani territory occupied by Armenia. It separates the troops in the positions they held when a ceasefire was signed in 1994.

"The blame for the loss of our soldiers falls entirely upon Azerbaijan’s authorities, and the responsibility for the losses in their army also falls upon them. If a soldier’s death means nothing to them, our soldier’s life is very precious to us,” Sargsyan said.

“I believe this volatile situation will gradually ease, since that is what human rationality demands,” he claimed.

Two Armenian soldiers were killed in separate incidents along the contact line on 19 and 20 November.

An Azerbaijani soldier was killed in a ceasefire violation on 26 November.

Azerbaijan's Defence said on 21 November that its forces opened fire only in response to fire from the Armenian side.
