Religious leaders from Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia have called for snipers to be withdrawn from the contact line.

Catholicos Garegin II, Sheikh ul-Islam Allashukur Pashazade and Patriarch Kirill made the call during a meeting in the Armenian capital Yerevan, Mediamax news agency reported.

Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia described the meeting as "a short but very successful one”.

The statement adopted at the meeting calls on leaders to support the peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict, the efforts made by the OSCE Minsk Group mediators and the ceasefire regime.

Patriarch Kirill said that the spiritual leaders of the three countries firmly call on the Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders to withdraw snipers from the contact line separating the two countries' troops "so that blood will no longer be shed and there will be no more deaths”.

Addressing a meeting of the Presidium of the CIS Inter-Religious Council in Yerevan today, both the Armenian Catholicos and Azerbaijani Sheikh said that the Karabakh conflict can only be settled peacefully.

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan told the presidium meeting that the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict should not be portrayed as religious.

An Azerbaijani soldier was killed in a ceasefire violation on 26 November, while two Armenian soldiers were killed in separate incidents along the contact line on 19 and 20 November.
