NATO is in no way involved in process of Karabakh settlement, Appathurai says.

NATO Special Representative for the South Caucasus and Central Asia James Appathurai said that holding of free and fair elections is important for Armenia.

Speaking at the videoconference organized by Information Center on NATO in Armenia for the students of YSU Center for European Studies, James Appathurai said that holding of free and fair elections is important for Armenia in the first place and NATO may only support it in this endeavor.

Speaking on Georgia’s intention to joint NATO, James Appathurai noted that “they make great efforts and have already made substantial success”. At the same time, he noted that holding of parliamentary and presidential elections on the proper level in Georgia will be one of the key factors in the process of making a decision whether or not it will join the Alliance.

NATO in very good relations with Azerbaijan

NATO Special Representative for the South Caucasus and Central Asia James Appathurai didn’t comment on the statement made by Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Araz Azimov on "stagnation” in Azerbaijan’s relations with NATO.

Speaking at the videoconference organized by Information Center on NATO in Armenia for the students of YSU Center for European Studies, James Appathurai said that the Alliance is in very good relations with Azerbaijan and expressed the hope that the new phase of Individual Partnership Action Plan (IPAP) will be soon approved.

NATO is in no way involved in process of Karabakh settlement

James Appathurai said that not the mediators but Armenia and Azerbaijan are responsible for the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.

Speaking at the videoconference organized by Armenia’s Information Center on NATO for the students of the YSU Center for European Studies, James Appathurai recalled that NATO is in no way involved in the process of Karabakh settlement and supports the efforts by the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs.

He said that “everybody had big expectations from the Kazan meeting held in summer 2011, but the results were disappointing”.

The NATO Special Representative didn’t give a clear answer to the question whether the Alliance may follow the example of the Minsk Group co-chairs and urge Azerbaijan to withdraw their snipers from the contact line.

“I don’t think NATO is authorized to advise the conflicting sides on specific questions”, said James Appathurai.
