Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov and his Armenian counterpart, Edward Nalbandian, have met in Vilnius.

The meeting was attended by the personal envoy of the OSCE chairman-in-office and the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, the international body mediating a solution to the Karabakh conflict, Interfax reports, quoting the Armenian Foreign Ministry press service.

"The meeting discussed the peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict and the possible adoption of a joint statement on the Karabakh conflict at the session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the OSCE member-states in Vilnius," the Armenian Foreign Ministry said.

The OSCE Ministerial Council is meeting in Vilnius on 6 and 7 December.

Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman Elman Abdullayev confirmed to APA that the meeting had taken place and had focused on the settlement of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

The OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs said on 1 December after their latest visit to the conflict region that the sides should use the December OSCE Ministerial Council meeting "to reaffirm their commitment to seeking a peaceful settlement and moving beyond the unacceptable status quo".

The status quo refers to the stalemate in the conflict that has been in place since Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a cease-fire in 1994. Armenian forces still occupy Nagorno-Karabakh and the seven surrounding Azerbaijani districts.

Azerbaijan insists that Nagorno-Karabakh should remain Azerbaijani territory, while Armenia insists on self-determination for the Armenians of Karabakh.
