Serzh Sargsyan has repeated that Armenia is ready to have normal relations with Turkey if Ankara reviews its attitude towards so called Armenian genocide.
Turkey must truly look at its history and it will help its own people first of all, the Armenian president said during a meeting with members of the Armenian community in Marseille, Times.am reported.
He cited the example of Germany as a country that had repented its past.
"We are sure that Turkey must repent. It is not a precondition or an aim of revenge. Once Turkey finds the strength and courage to review its attitude towards the Armenian genocide – our attitude is unchanged – we are ready to have normal relations with Turkey as with neighbouring countries”, Sargsyan said.
“We must remember the example of Germany and Poland. Sooner or later Turkey will have the right authorities, who will be able to bow their heads at Tsitsernakaberd [memorial in Yerevan]. They must do it for the Turkish nation.”
Turkey, for its part, has set major progress towards a peaceful settlement in Armenia's conflict with Azerbaijan over Karabakh a condition for it to restore relations with Armenia.
Turkey and Armenia signed two protocols on rapprochement in 2009 but the process stalled with neither side ratifying the accords.
