Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told the French newspaper Le Monde that "the Armenian resolution at the French Parliament offends Turkey's national honor".
In an interview with the Le Monde newspaper, Davutoglu said that the Armenian resolution at the French Parliament offended the Turkish nation's history and was against the values of France.
Turkey is ready to discuss all issues openly. When the holy prophet Muhammad gets attacked, Europeans call this freedom of expression. And now, they are preparing to penalize a thought. The Armenian resolution is an attack on the history of intellectuals and French values, Davutoglu said.
We will not let our values be killed by narrow visioned political calculations. If this resolution was so important, why did it not get voted on before- Trying to be so populist is risky, Davutoglu said.
We were surprised to see the resolution in the French Parliament as French President Nicolas Sarkozy had assured Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan through his diplomatic adviser that they would not let such a resolution get adopted at the French Parliament, Davutoglu told Le Monde.
Turkey has offered Armenia to open all archives and to discuss the incidents of 1915. We do discuss everything. We are ready to share the pain of our Armenian neighbors. However, history can not be evaluated from only one perspective, Davutoglu added.
The French Parliament on Thursday will vote on a resolution that criminalizes the rejection of Armenian allegations pertaining to the incidents of 1915 with a prison term of one year and a monetary fine of 45,000 euros.
