Sargsyan, Ahmadinejad Discuss Karabakh

Armenian and Iranian presidents sign several agreements.

As a result of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s official visit to Armenia on Friday, Ahmadinejad and Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan adopted a joint statement, which specifically reads:

“Presidents of the two states discussed the relations between Armenia and Iran, the prospects for cooperation, and presented the two states’ views on regional and international matters. The Presidents reaffirmed their determination to further develop bilateral relations.

The presidents underscored the activities of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission of the two countries, and stressed the accordance reached during the Commission’s session. During the visit were signed: the Memorandum of Understanding on ‘Provision of Support for Armenia’s Development’; the Protocol on Making Additions to the Agreement on ‘Building and Operating Hydro Power Plants on the Arax River’; the Memorandum of Understanding on ‘Cooperation in the Domain of Labor and Social Affairs’; the Action Plan for the ‘Implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on Environmental Cooperation’; the Memorandum of Understanding on ‘Joint Cooperation Between the Institute of Standards and Industrial Research of Iran and Armenia's National Institute of Standards’; and the Memorandum of Understanding on the ‘Contract of Permission for the Construction of Meghri Hydro Power Plant [HPP].’ The presidents expressed a delight over the expanding cooperation in the energy sector.

The presidents underscored the need to carry out the strategic projects toward constructing HPPs on the Arax River, the railway which will connect the railway networks of the two states, and the Iran-Armenia oil pipeline.

The presidents stressed the importance of creating favorable conditions for the business circles of Armenia and Iran. The presidents deemed indispensable the establishment and strengthening of long-lasting peace, stability, and security in the region. Reflecting on settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, the presidents stressed the need to resolve it peacefully and based on the fundamental norms and principles of international law.

The presidents underscored the strengthening of global peace and security. The presidents stressed the need for establishing the people’s lawful rights under regional stability, security, and peace. The presidents underscored the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. They noted all countries’, including Armenia’s and Iran’s, right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. The two presidents stressed the need to settle Iran’s nuclear issue through talks and diplomatic avenues. The presidents expressed a readiness to cooperate in the fight against international terrorism and organized crime.”
