Azerbaijan is marking the 18th anniversary of the liberation of the southwestern town of Horadiz from Armenian occupation.
On 5 January 1994, Azerbaijani forces freed Horadiz and 22 other villages in Fizuli District from Armenian occupiers during the war over Nagorno-Karabakh.
The important strategic operation was later named Horadiz and laid the foundation for future Azerbaijani victories.
After Horadiz, the Azerbaijani army liberated part of Jabrail District and villages in Kalbajar District: Bozlu, Tekegaya, Babashlar, Ganlikand, Chapli, Gasimbinasi, Yanshagbina, Bagirsag, Gamishli and Bagirli.
Chichekli and other strategic heights were freed and a section of the Kalbajar-Lachin highway was retaken.
The Armenian side suffered major losses of personnel (about 4,000) and hardware during the fierce fighting.
The success of the Azerbaijani army in the operation caused concern in Armenia and among its supporters and helped to bring it to sign the Bishkek protocol with Azerbaijan on a ceasefire.
Every year on this day veterans of the Horadiz operation visit Martyrs' Avenue to remember their deceased friends.
