“France Buries Hope For Opening Of Turkish-Armenian Border”

E-mail Print PDF

Interview with deputy of the Turkish parliament from the Nationalistic Movement Muharram Varli.

Q: What is the position of the Party of the Nationalistic Movement and the faction of this party in the Turkish parliament towards the law criminalization denial of genocide passed in the Senate of France?

A: This decision can naturally not be perceived as an ordinary law, since this document is hostile to Turkey. The government has not worked enough to avert the recognition of the so-called ‘Armenian genocide’ in the European parliaments. In other words, this work was minimal. Meanwhile, the small part of the work done by the Turkish side was, unfortunately, aimed not at the adoption of preventive measures. This work was limited to discussion of completed facts, that is the recognition of the  so-called ‘Armenian genocide in any parliament. It was necessary to explain to Paris that the use of the ‘Armenian issue’ in attaining internal political goals will further worsen the state of France.

Q: Do you think that the response of official Ankara to the decision of the French Senate was sufficient and adequate?

A: We do not see any action of the government in this direction. All the same, I do hope that the government will take the steps they promised in relation to France. I want to believe that the government will take effective measures. I also hope that realizing the determination of the Turkish side, France will understand that it made a mistake by passing such a discriminative law.

France is among the main states of the European Union therefore it may treat the demarches taken by Azerbaijan and Turkey with distrust. Therefore, Baku and Ankara need to response stiffly to Paris by its action rather than words.

Q: The demand to banish French companies from Azerbaijan and Turkey are heard in both countries? Does the ban of French capital meet the interests of Azerbaijan and Turkey?

A: Naturally, the adoption of joint decisions by Azerbaijan and Turkey in relation to France could be more effective and adequate. It is possible to take effective decisions towards France, which will become adequate towards the passage of such an anti-Turkish and anti-Azerbaijani document by this country. However, the implications of such a decision should be accepted adequately. I think that it is early to banish French capital from Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Q: Armenia insists that Turkey must also recognize the fact of ‘genocide’. Are these demands rightful and fair?

A: The history of Turkey lacks the cases of genocide. Therefore, the recognition of ‘genocide’ by Turkey is impossible.

Q: How will the issue of the Turkish-Armenian border be further settled?

A: Western countries should completely bury their hope for the normalization of the Turkish-Armenian relations and especially the opening of borders between the countries. The French Senate has buried the last ‘hopes’ for normalization of ties between Turkey and Armenia.
