Azerbaijani, Turkish Diasporas Protest in Houston

E-mail Print PDF

A demonstration of Azerbaijani and Turkish diaspora was held in front of the French Consulate in Houston.

Azerbaijani and Turkish communities of Houston held a peaceful demonstration in front of the French Consulate in Houston on January 27, protesting against the draft law passed by both lower and upper houses of the French Parliament on criminalizing individuals questioning the so-called "Armenian genocide".

The protest was organized by the US Azeris Network/US Turkic Network and ATA-Houston (USAN/USTN). Co-founder and Secretary of USAN stated that the event was initiated by activists of USAN, Mehriban Zahid and Togrul Mamedbekov. It involved a silent protest with duct-taped mouths conveying the message of lack of freedom of speech in France and submitting an official letter of protest to the consulate officials.

The posters of the protest mainly compared the conventional and historical perception of freedom of speech in France with the contemporary France under Sarkozy administration, which does everything to kill that image of Republican France by serving the narrow interests of the Armenian diaspora in France in return for their votes in the upcoming Presidential election in 2012.
