The US Azeris Network (USAN) is urging opposition to a Californian decision to remember the victims of pogroms in Baku, Sumgayit and Ganja.
The Californian State Assembly passed Resolution No 96 on 30 January to declare 27 February 2012 the Californian day to remember the victims of Armenian pogroms in the Azerbaijani cities of Sumgayit, Ganja and Baku in 1988-1990.
"We need to rise up against this abnormal resolution which is designed to distort history!" USAN tells its members and all Azerbaijanis in the United States.
The resolution was submitted for consideration in the Californian legislature by members of the Californian State Assembly Felipe Fuentes, Katcho Achadjian and Mike Gatto.
In 2009 Fuentes sent a letter to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev about the anniversary of the Khojaly tragedy in which he remembered the over 600 victims.
"I share the grief of the Azerbaijanis of America and citizens of Azerbaijan who commemorate the victims of the tragedy. The international community confirmed that this genocide was committed by Armenian and Russian troops dislocated in the region," Fuentes said in his letter of 2009.
The Azerbaijani authorities say that the killings of ethnic Armenians and Azerbaijanis in Sumgayit in 1988 were instigated by the Soviet KGB.
