The United States considers that the attainment of an agreement on Nagorno Karabakh between Armenia and Azerbaijan by the end of this year is "possible but not inevitable", said assistant US Secretary of State on European and Eurasian affairs Daniel Fried.

"There are some uneasy decisions, which both parties must take. If it was easy to resolve this conflict, it would have been settled long before', said Fried.

The US diplomat noted that the possibility for the large scale armed conflict around Nagorno Karabakh has dropped following the recent events in Georgia. "I think that this constant threat has weakened as these events reminded to the region that war is terrible", said he.

"Some people always tend to hold furious discussions", added the US assistant secretary of state, "But war is not a joke. It is the worst variant"
