RETURNING OF AKHYSKA TURKS TO GEORGIA MAY MEAN MORE ISOLATION OF ARMENIA

Fallout for the August war with Russia of Ossetia has left the Republic of Georgia vulnerable and, some analysts say, liable to severe division. The current condition also has potential implications for Armenia.

Specifically: An earlier commitment of Tbilisi authorities to the Council of Europe on the repatriation of Meskhet Turks may completely isolate Armenia from the north. The 8-kilometer Turkish-Azeri border on the Nakhijevan section has a great strategic value from the viewpoint of Turkish-Azeri interests, but is not perceived by Turkey as the only and final one. Regarding the question against the background of tendencies for closer positions of Moscow and Ankara, some observers assume as possible that the problem of the return of Meskhet Turks to the Samtskhe-Javakheti province of Georgia will be given urgency again.
