Israel can recognize the Armenian Genocide only if outraged by Turkey, a Russian expert said.
"Israel's position on the issue is quite clear. To recognize Armenian Genocide would mean to equate it with Holocaust, what is inadmissible for Jews," said senior lecturer at Saint-Petersburg State University, expert at the Center of Oriental Studies, Ph.D. in history Alexander Sotnichenko. Another important factor is that the Armenian Diaspora is not strong in Israel, said Sotnichenko.
As to U.S. recognition of the "Armenian genocide," Sotnichenko said, it will be possible if Turkey takes up anti-American policy.
"The Armenian community of the United States is very influential. Nevertheless, withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq will facilitate the Turkish-U.S. relations. Under the circumstances, "genocide" recognition will be unlikely," he said.
