"We are optimistic about recognition of the "genocide" during the office of the new Congress and government," said Mark Kirk, Republican MP from Illinois and co-chair of the Armenia-U.S. friendship group.
In April on occasion of anniversary of the so-called "Armenian genocide", Armenian lobby intensifies its efforts to get its claims on the 1915 events adopted. Armenians claim that the Ottoman Empire, the predecessor of Turkey, committed "genocide" against Armenians in 1915.
Kirk urged to strengthen efforts to get the "genocide" recognized and called on Americans of Armenian origin to be more active.
"We have more strength in the first period of the new Congress and government," said the MP, adding that the U.S. State Department and Defense Department are likely to impede recognition of the "genocide".
"We must now begin to work and submit a relevant bill," he said.
Kirk recalled his statements on the "genocide" made during the election campaign of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, adding that he wonders what she will say now, upon occupying this post.
Kirk expressed his hope that during the office of the new President the number of people supporting the Armenian claims will increase and their voices will be sufficiently convincing.
