Speaking to Azerbaijani news site Day.az, Yakis said that Karabakh issue turned into a security problem for the region. Yakis said, "Karabakh is an obstacle for stability and development of the region. The only obstacle for opening of Turkish-Armenian border is Karabakh problem. Turkey considers the problem as its own problem. And is not opening the border to Armenia because of that."

Yakis said that EU does not insist for opening of Armenian border. He said, "The relations between Justice and Development Party government and European Union is being established over me. And till now i never heard such a call from European officials like 'open the Armenian border'. They only suggest Turkey to decrease the tension between countries."
