said lively in the Turkish CNN Turk TV channel, Trend News reported. Mercan said Turkey is interested in improving Turkish-Armenian relations, but only under the condition that the country's national interests will not be damaged and Azerbaijan will not remain alone.
"The Nagorno-Karabakh negotiations are still lasting between Azerbaijan and Armenia," Mercan said. "Turkey supports them and hopes for peaceful settlement of this problem."
Armenian-Turkish ties have been severed since 1993 due to Armenia's claims of an alleged genocide, and the country's occupation of 20 percent of Azerbaijani lands.
Turkish President Abdullah Gul visited Yerevan on Sept. 6, 2008 upon the invitation of his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sarkisyan to watch an Armenia-Turkey football match.
