Armenian lobbies have been continuously reminding Barack Obama his promises on recognizing the 1915 Events as"genocide." As it is quoted in Armenian Assembly of America President Obama has even said that "Joe Biden and I believe that the Armenian Genocide is not an allegation, personal opinion, or a point of view, but rather a widely documented fact supported by an overwhelming body of historical evidence" during his presidential election campaigns while numerous foreign policy specialist in the US found the recognition of the events more than risky for Turkey- US relations.
Although titling events as "Meds Yeghern" which means "great catastrophe" in Armenian, his speech was evaluated as a retreatment from the previous allegations and it did not satisfy Armenian Diaspora as it was expected.
Armenian Assembly of America, which is one of the most influential Armenian organization in the US being established in 1972, reported that President Barack Obama "failed to deliver on the change he promised."
Moreover, Armenian National Committee of America also gave the remembrance day speech news with title "President Obama Retreats from Armenian Genocide Pledge."
In his Rememberence Day speech, President Obama stated that "Ninety four years ago, one of the great atrocities of the 20th century began. Each year, we pause to remember the 1.5 million Armenians who were subsequently massacred or marched to their death in the final days of the Ottoman Empire. The Meds Yeghern must live on in our memories, just as it lives on in the hearts of the Armenian people."
Shifting the focus on the advancement of Turkey- Armenia relations more than on 1915 Events, President Obama also remarked that he strongly supports "the efforts by Turkey and Armenia to normalize their bilateral relations."
