A panel titled "Ataturk as a soldier and Politician on his 128th birthday" in Presidency of General Staff in the context of May 19 Youth and Sports Day celebrations.
The panel directed by Historian Professor Doctor Ilber Ortayli, hosted the speeches of several historians about Ataturk.
President of General Staff ?lker Basbug asked to the attendants if Ataturk is known in the schools of United States of America. Replying the question, Professor Doctor George Gawrych stated that he is impressed with the deep meaning in the books of Ataturk and said, "Ataturk is a real military genius."
The question of President of General Staff Ilker Basbug in the second section of the panel is applauded by the attendants. Basbug asked to Professor Doctor Justin McCarthy whether the opinion of Western media about Turkey is looking like the times before the war or it has changed after the war.
Stating that it is a very good question, Professor McCarthy said "Today, there is a prejudice in media of U.S. about Turkey. This prejudice is related with the prophet Muhammed, Armenians and even with missionary activities. That prejudice is still effective especially in New York Times. If there is a report about Armenians in the press, then they somehow connect the report with genocide and they present the report on the first page. We heard gossips that Turks paid 7 million dollars to the lobby for lobbying about Armenian issue while we have no idea about how much Armenians pay to the lobbies. There is an inevitable lack of knowledge in US. Western countries are so ignorant about Turkey actually they know nothing about Turkey. The media of Britain should make researches and should work over this issue. And Turks should tell theirselves better."
