E-mail Print PDF

Speaking in a campaign speech in Tebriz, Rezaei criticized Iranian foreign policy of Iran during occupation of Upper Karabakh by Armenian forces. Stating that Iran was not holding an active policy in the times of Nagorno-Karabakh war, Rezaei said, "If Iran could hold an active foreign policy and if it could play its role in the region effectively, Azerbaijani land Upper Karabakh would never been occupied by Armenia".

Rezaei said, "Foreign policy of Iran should be so efficient that we wouldn?t be witnessing conflicts and wars".

Stating that Iran shouldn?t have let occupation of Nagorno Karabakh using its special position and countless capabilities, Rezaei said that Iran couldn?t prevent occupation of Nagorno Karabakh and emergence of war.

Iranian officials have stated that Nagorno-Karabakh is Azerbaijani land and Armenian occupation should be ended immediately.

The conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims on the lands of Azerbaijan. Armenia occupied Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding regions that makes nearly 20 percent of lands of Azerbaijan. Parties signed a ceasefire in 1994. The co-chairs of OSCE MG — Russia, France and U.S. — are holding peace negotiations to resolve the problem in a peaceful way.
