Speaking after NATO Defence Ministers summit, General Secretary of NATO Jaap de Hoop Scheffer stated that NATO cannot intervene or contribute to the process of resolution of Nagorno-Karabakh problem. NATO General Secretary said they had never discussed this issue with Azerbaijani and Armenian Defence Ministers during two days of meeting in Brussels.

Reminding that the dispute is being handle in the frame of OSCE Minsk Group, Scheffer said, “Minsk Group has studies over the dispute since years. Other than that, this is not an issue that concerns NATO.”

Renewing that as any other regional force Iran should participate to the meeting in the Afghanistan too, Scheffer called Iran to attend to the upcoming meeting of NATO.

Defence Ministers summit of NATO focused on struggles against pirates and establishment of security during the elections in Afghanistan. The decision made towards continuing of NATO’s efforts for ceasing pirates and assignment of 10,000 soldiers for securing Afghanistan during elections.

Announcing that they have decided for establishment of a new NATO base in Afghanistan, Schaffer said that NATO’s mission of fighting against terrorism in Afghanistan will continue.
