E-mail Print PDF

Research made by Istanbul Bilgi University showed that Armenians in Turkey feel that they are just like Turks except religion. According to research Armenians use Muslim terms like “Inshallah” and “Thanks to Allah” in daily life and they invite their Muslim neighbours for dinner in Ramadan. Most of Turkish Armenians consider that it is normal to go to Mosque when there is funeral ceremony.

Some of attendants of the research said, “The way we do everything are all like Turks. Our meals are the same. Being Armenian is in the head. Most of us do not listen music or read book in Armenian language. Discrimination of religion and race is meaningless. They just feed hostility.”

One attendant said, “We grow up with Turkish traditions. My uncle martyrized in the army. If i concern of the problems in Turkey, i am Turkish. Turkish people consider of being Turkish in a different way. They consider that a non-Muslim can’t be Turkish. Ataturk’s nationalism covers all homeland. What matters is being from Turkey. I love this country.”

According to the research 82 percent of attendatns define theirselves as “Armenian” while 64 percent call theirselves “citizen of Republic of Turkey.”

Research showed that Armenians in Turkey know and use Turkish language better than Armenian. 90 percent of Armenians between ages 19—24 speaks Turkish better than Armenian. 83 percent of attendants read Turkish newspapers and journals while 30 percent of them reads books in Armenian language.
