
An attempt by an Armenian delegate to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to secure Azerbaijani and Turkish support for a proposal calling for the release of all Armenian political prisoners has sparked accusations of treason from Armeni's governing Republican Party.
At a June 29 news conference, Zaruhi Postanjian, a member of the opposition Heritage Party, characterized Azerbaijan's and Turkey's support for the proposal as a diplomatic success. Postanjian had earlier expressed criticism of Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process, and of Turkey for the 1915 deaths of hundreds of thousands ethnic Armenians in Turkey.
“Let anyone . . . who speaks of patriotism or treason try to come up with such statements [at PACE] and then receive support from these countries,” Postnajian said.
