Former Istanbul District Officer of National Intelligence Organization (MİT) Osman Nuri Gundes was leading to the opearations of the organization against Armenian terrorist organization ASALA in 1980’s. Osman Nuri Gundes told in an interview about the plans of Russian Intelligence Organization about making a military coup in Turkey.
Q: You were the officer that leads to the operations of National Intelligence Organization against ASALA. There are rumours that ASALA is not terminated by National Security Organization but because of its internal conflicts. Is that true?
That is a black propaganda. It was our duty to deal with those betrayers. It is secret of state, i cannot tell. But operations against Armenian terrorist organization ASALA in and out of Turkey played an important role for termination of the bloody terroristic actions of ASALA. For example we informed officials about Ankara Esenboga Airport terroristic action plans. We prevented a pogrom by helping security forces to ascertain weapons and explosives on a courier. We prevented usage of several weapon and explosives in the sudden attack to the Ankara Embassy of Egypt when we captured those weapons in a farm in Gebze. We helded many other operations against ASALA. I managed those operations. It is not true to underestimate actions of Turkish intelligence. It is stated in the state records that how Armenian terrorist organization ASALA was terminated but those are kept as secret to not to cause international problems. If you terminate the desire for battling of an organization, that would mean termination of that organization. That was what we did with ASALA.
What kind of operations was held against ASALA. Let me give you an example about psychological aspect of it. Skull figures that are used on power plants were drawn on the car of Ara Toranyan in Paris. Doing so, we made him feel himself in danger and to give up with terroristic actions.
Placement of a bomb to the car of Toranyan… That issue is different. Let’s skip it. They say the bomb did not explode. That operation’s intention was not killing Toranyan, it was for making him scared. The nationalist staff that is used against ASALA was not the main staff of state. I mean Abdullah Çatlı and others. They were not the ones who did main work. There were people who were assigned especcially for this duty. We managed them. We used the motives of money and nationalism together. Metin Gunyol was one of them. There were Turcomans in Northern Iraq. Sabah Ketene was finding men for us. ASALA operations was a process that lasted
