Ankara Second Court of Criminal Jurisdiction stated its justified decision about the court decision that convicted CHP deputy Canan Aritman to pay 1 Lira of compensation due to her claims about the ethnic roots of President Abdullah Gul’s mother.
The decision said, “It is possible for citizens of Republic of Turkey to belong to Armenian or any other ethnic roots. These differences are thought as cultural richness of the State.”
The justified decision about the court decision that obliged Republican People’s party (CHP) parliamentarian to pay 1 Lira of compensation is issued. The justified decision of the court says that the mother of President Abdullah Gul is not Armenian and even if she was, it would not change anything. Decision said that Armenains are cultural richness of Turkish state as any other ethnicity.
Commenting to the statements of President Abdullah Gul about “I apologize to my Armenian brothers” campaingn, Izmir representative of CHP Canan Aritman had said that Abdullah Gul should be the President of Turkey instead being President of his ethnic roots. She had said, “You will see if you do search his ethnic roots.”
Aritman had criticized the approach of President Abdullah Gul to Armenian apology campaing and claimed that Gul’s mother is Armenian origin. Thereupon President Abdullah Gul sued Canan Aritman and CHP deputy was convicted to pay 1 Lira of compensation to President Gul. In its justified decision, Ankara Second Court of Criminal Jurisdiction stated,
“It is possible for citizens of Republic of Turkey to belong to Armenian or any other ethnic roots. These differences are thought as cultural richness of the State and nation in the common ground of citizenship of Republic of Turkey. Being an Armenian in this country is not illegal nor something to be blamed of.”
