“The joint statement by the U.S., Russian and French presidents makes it clear that process of resolution of the Karabakh conflict is nearing end,” Armenia's Republic Party political council member Suren Surenyants said.

He said he does not understand the surprise by the country's political forces as both politicians and public were aware of the Madrid Principles.

“Role of the co-chair countries, particular that of Russia and the United States, will give time neither to the president of Armenia nor president of Azerbaijan somehow to delay signing the agreement. Both Armenia and Azerbaijan will try to extend this process, because each of them have interests,” Surenyants said adding that mediators want to get some wording on the Madrid principles till end of the year.

He said any principles of conflict resolution has its disadvantages and may not be ideal, but the Madrid principles could serve as a basis for resolving the conflict peacefully.

“The delay in the process of resolving the conflict works against Armenia. Ten years ago we had more favorable conditions for solving the problem than it is now, and no one can say that will there be in 10 years if the matter has not been resolved,” he said.
