While rejecting claims that the normalization process with Armenia had stalled,Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu pointed to the importance of last month's meeting between the Azerbaijani and Armenian leaderships for a solution on Nagorno-Karabakh. “The status-quo is for nobody' interest, it can produce risks any time. The Azerbaijani and Armenian leaders met four times. The process has not slowed down. There is acceleration. These two processes would affect each other positively. We have a vision-oriented approach for the Caucasus. We will take steps patiently,”Davutoglu said. When asked whether the Turkish-Armenian border would be opened before the end of the year, Davutoglu refrained from giving a definite statement, however, he emphasized that they were expecting positive developments within the course of 2009.

Turkish public opinion demanding

Commenting on the discontent in China caused by Prime Minister Erdogan's statements that regarded the unrest in the country's Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region as „almost genocide,“ Davuto„lu argued that Beijing understands Ankara“s concerns. „We have a totally human-rights oriented perspective,“ he said, and hinted that the public opinion was influential over the government's line in foreign policy issues. “Turkish public opinion is very sensitive. Now they expect a strong reaction from their government on international issues wherever they emerge. They want Turkey to interfere. And I find this approach very healthy.”
