Metsamor nuclear power plant, was built in 1950’s, can be seen by the naked eye from Igdir and is constructed over seismic belt.

Settled close to Turkish border, on 16 kilometers distance to Igdir, Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant disturbes the citizens of Igdir. The construction technology of the reactor is known as one of the most problematic reactors in the world.

Citizens of Igdir state that they are concerned about the security risks of the old-technology Nuclear Power Plant and they wanted for provisions to be made before any accident happens. People of Igdir state that they are afraid of the probability of radioactive material leakageto nature.

Concerns of citizens of Igdir, mobilized officials. Several researches are made about the issue and examples taken from the field were sent to Turkish Atomic Energy Institution. Although the results of analysis showed that there is no abnormality in the field, citizens still do not feel safe because of the events like being born of bicephalous animals.

Igdir’s city governer Saim Saffet Karahisarl“said, “Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant is very old. It was kept closed for a long while because of the damages in the earthquake in 1980’s. Power Plant was built over seismic belt. Operating such plant may result in a big accident which would hit whole Armenia and Igdir. Therefore, Armenia needs to find another way to produce electricity. Metsamor is needed to be analyzed by scientists. If it is forming a threat, it should be closed.”

Igdir’s Director of Civil Defence Muslim Celik said that the radiation that is released by Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant is being tracked. “We did not see any number that is high enough to threat human health. But the danger that is being created by the old Metsamor Power Plant cannot be ignored,” said he. Stating that the construction area of the Nuclear Power Plant is over a seismic belt, Celik said, “An earthquake would return a huge natural disaster. Even mentioning such probability is very scary. Because earthquake would trigger the leak from the Power Plant. We cannot even foresee how many people would die if such accident takes place.”
