RECESSION RISES UNEMPLOYEMENT RATE IN ARMENIA

Armenia has nearly 101,000 unemployed people currently, head of the State Social Protection Agency at the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs Vazgen Khachikyan said adding that unemployed are those people who appealed to employment bodies after they lost job, Novosti Armenia reported.

He said the number of unemployed was 85,000 in early 2009.

“This is official figure. But there are also people who do not register with the employment bodies after they lose job,” he said.

He said economic crisis has caused reduction in job in Armenia.

Armenia“s unemployment rate was 6.7 percent in January-June 2009 compared to 6.3 percent for the same period of 2008.

The number of economically active people totalled 1.178 million in January-June 2009, 1.099 million of whom were employed.
