Level of crime increased by 71% in Armenia in the first half of 2009 compared with the reporting period of last year, Head of Armenia's Police Alik Sargsyan said, APA reports quoting Novosti Armenii website.

6849 crimes were recorded in Armenia in the first half of 2009, 3998 crimes were recorded in the first half of 2008.

“While comparing these figures, I can say that the level of crime increased sharply. But I do not see anything extraordinary in this. Crime is a social phenomenon, and it has social roots,” he said.

According to Sargsyan, crime has always been and will be.

“The main thing is to combat crimes effectively. I can say that compared with the reporting period of last year, detection of crimes has also increased by 10%,” he said.
