“The agreement reached between Yerevan and Ankara to start normalization of relations and the two Protocols on Establishing Diplomatic Relations are the result of long secret negotiations held under auspices of Switzerland,” said Aybars Gorculu, expert at Sabanci University and Assistant Program Manager for Foreign Policy at Turkey-based center TESEV.

“The best and important part of these documents is that the first step that must be made is opening the border within two months,” Gorculu said.

“This is what we wanted for a long time since opening of borders is the key step in Armenia-Turkey normalization,” the expert said.

The expert said now it is up to the political elites of both countries which must convince the public and parliaments to adopt these protocols.

“This process may take longer than two months, but Serzh Sargsyan have to go to Turkey for the return match even if the border will not be reopened before this. His refusal could jeopardize the entire process and all efforts made so far,” the Turkish expert said.
