SYRIA WELCOMES TURKISH-ARMENIAN RAPPROCHEMENT

Foreign Minister of Syria Walid Al-Muallem welcomed joint efforts of Armenia and Turkey to normalize bilateral relations.

In June Syrian President Bashar al-Assad paid an official visit to Yerevan and discussed withArmenian President Serzh Sargsyan the development of bilateral relations. Syrian leader called on Armenia and Turkey to normalize their relations and proposed Syrian mediation. He expressed hope that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict would be settled as soon as possible and nothing would prevent the development of the region.

On August 31, the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Ministries of Armenia and Turkey issued a press release, that says: “The Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Turkey have agreed to start their internal political consultations on two protocols” the “Protocol on the establishment of diplomatic relations” and the “Protocol on the development of bilateral relations.”“
