Publishing a report about the process of rapprochement between Turkey and Armenia, The Economist magazine wrote that rapprochement is a real possibility but not certain. Claiming that the initializing the protocols was made to change the opinion of Armenian President Serzh Sarksyan about coming to Turkey, magazine wrote that Turkey showed an insconsistant reaction.
In the analysis titled “football diplomacy,” The Economist wrote that establishing ties between two old foes may take long time. Reminding that Turkish government had to take steps backward because of nationalist reaction and because of reaction of Azerbaijan, magazine wrote that opposition parties both in Turkey and Armenia strongly condemns governments’ policies of rapprochement. The Economist wrote that Turkey shows inconsistent reactions about the recent protocols. Magazine wrote, “Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu says that he expects opening of state borders between Turkey and Armenia till the end of this year. But at the same time he states that normal relations between Turkey and Armenia could be possible only if Armenia makes comprehensive peace with Azerbaijan. It is obvious that negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia towards resolution of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is not giving results. Maybe Davutoglu’s most appropriate statement is that which states that the process of rapprochement between Turkey and Armenia will take long time. No one knows how long that process will take.”
On the other hand, Head of Group of governing Republican Party in Armenian Parliament Galust Saakyan stated that there is no need for holding a referendum for the protocols that Turkey and Armenia agreed on to establish diplomatic relations and to develop bilateral ties. According to the report of Mediamax news agency, Sarksyan said that opposition parties tries to speculate about the protocols. Criticizing the attitude of nationalist Dashnaktsutyun Party, Sarksyan said, “It is not time for the slogan „Freedom or death,” we should be able to evaluate the current situation logically.”
