ASALA - PKK COOPERATION

Turkey will demand information about ASALA and PKK. According to the allegations, relations between PKK and ASALA may sabotage Turkey’s Armenia opening.

One of the most important clauses of the protocols that are initialized by Turkey and Armenia is the agreement over sharing intelligence on the issue of ASALA and PKK. According to the protocols, Armenians will prepare an edict that condemns terroristic actions of ASALA that murdered several Turkish diplomats and civilians. Although the terrorist organization marginalized, Turkish National Intelligence Agency demands the intelligence about members of terrorist organization ASALA that are still living in Armenia.

On the other hand, Armenia demands intelligence about terrorist organization PKK. Turkey and Armenia agreed on exchanging intelligence. Because there are concerns that both ASALA and PKK may sabotage opening of borders. Therefore, the answer of the question; “May cooperation between ASALA and PKK sabotage the opening of borders?” will be decisive about the fate of the success of process of normalization of relations.

Because, the results of such terroristic actions would create tension between two countries. As Turkey demands information about ASALA, Armenian authorities are disturbed of settlement of PKK in Armenia. Armenia is uncomfortable about terrorist organization’s efforts towards settle itself down in the regions close to Turkey border.

Another reason for Turkey’s demand about ASALA is information that ASALA is continuing its existence within seperatist terrorist organization PKK. And existence of Armenian citizens in the cadre of PKK is supports validity of this claim. Currently, there are about 20 people in the cadre of PKK that are registered to the state of Armenia.

There are also a reasonable amount of Syrian-Armenians in the organization. Most of Syrian-Armenians are the heirs of people who were deported from Anatolia during World-War-I era so that they are full of hatred against Turkey. It is considered that the reason for ASALA to be able to survive within PKK is due to that hatred. For example one of the high level authority in the terrorist organization, Fehman Huseyin is a Syrian-Armenian. Fehman Huseyin is in coordination with the ’Ergenekon’ wing of the PKK and adopts armed struggle. As Huseyin, the position of the Armenians within the terrorist organization is fine. There are other Armenians that are on administration of PKK.

As before, PKK accelerates its efforts to get into action in Armenia. Reaching to Yerevan through yezidi villages, PKK gets organized in Armenia. PKK’s representation in Armenia is held by Mirdisi Ozbay. According to intelligence sources, PKK existence in Armenia is vital for remaining members of Armenian terrorist organization ASALA.

There is another dimension of the issue. It is a well-known fact that there are cyrpto-Armenians in the terrorist organization. Head of terrorist organization, Abdullah Ocalan sent a letter to Former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan on April 10, 1998 following his election as President for the second time, writing that they recognize 1915 events as genocide. In a similar way, so called “Kurdistan Parliament” in Europe had recognized so called Armenian genocide with a decision in 1997.
