Turkey’s friendly approach to Armenia increases the hope in Armenia about opening of the state border between two countries. Giving an interview to Russian public television ’Vesti’, Armenian President Serzh Sarksyan replied the questions about recent developments in Turkish-Armenian relations.

To a question whether the borders between Turkey and Armenia will be opened till the soccer game between Turkey and Armenia on October 14, Armenian President said, “We had agreement on this when the process of negotiations started. We want this process to progress without any preconditions.” Stating that he is hopeful about opening of borders, Sarksyan said, “We cannot state that the process will be successful for hundred percent.”

Sarksyan said, “Turks and Azerbaijanis use the concept „one nation, two states“ so often. I do not want to discuss that. But normalization of relations between Turkey and Armenia is not only towards the interests of Turkey and Armenia. That will also be an important development for Azerbaijan.” He stated that establishing links between the issues of Nagorno-Karabakh and opening of Turkey-Armenia border will make the situation get worse.

Accepting that Nagorno-Karabakh is part of Azerbaijan, Sarksyan said, “Juristically, Nagorno-Karabakh was part of Azerbaijan. It proclaimed its independence and got seperated from Azerbaijan. It is not true to think of another alternative here.”
