UN THANKS TURKEY FOR THE EFFORTS TOWARDS CYPRUS AND ARMENIA ISSUES

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon thanked Turkey for its support towards resolution of the Cyprus problem. Shaking hands for a while, Ban Ki-Moon thanked Prime Minister Erdogan in Turkish language, saying “Tesekkur ederim.”

The meeting held closed to the press and Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, State Minister Ali Babacan, State Minister and chief negotiator Egemen Bagis, Minister of Finance Mehmet Simsek, Turkey’s permanent representative in UN Ertugrul Apakan and Foreign Ministry undersecretary Feridun Siniroglu also attended to the meeting.

In his meeting with Prime Minister Erdogan, Ban Ki-Moon expressed his content about Turkey’s support to the special advisor of United Nations for Cyprus, Alexander Downer. He said that he is optimistic about ongoing negotiation process in for the solution in Cyprus.

According to the Spokesmanship of UN, in their meeting, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and Prime Minister Erdogan discussed Cyprus, climate change, Turkey-Armenia relations, Afghanistan, peace process in Middle East and Gaza issues.

Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon thanked Turkey because of its leadership in the issue of climate change and expressed his regrets about the flood in Istanbul.

Expressing his content about Turkey’s support to the special advisor of United Nations for Cyprus, Alexander Downer, Ban Ki-Moon reminded that 42 meetings held in the first round of the negotiations for solution in Cyprus and that he is optimistic for the solution.

It is reported that General Secretary Ban Ki-Moon stated that it is important for parties to reach this acceleration at this period.

Stating that he welcomes the steps towards normalization of relations between Turkey and Armenia, Ban Ki-Moon thanked Turkey’s efforts towards peace in the region.
