Director of Independent Turkey Committee, Former Finn President Martti Ahtisaari stated that recently Turkey is much more open about discussions on Armenia issue. He said that participation of historians and intellectuals to these discussions is positive development.

Former Finn President stressed the importance of the process of normalization that started with the visit of President Abdullah Gul to Yerevan to watch the soccer game between Turkish and Armenian national teams. Ahtisaari said, “But decisions of foreign parliaments on recognition of 1915 events as genocide damaged the atmosphere and caused harsh reactions and scepticism in Turkey.”

Ahtisaari stated that good relations between Turkey and Armenia will positively affect the situation in whole Caucasus.
