The Armenian National Congress, the opposition bloc led by ex-president of ArmeniaLevon Ter-Petrosian, has announced it will boycott the parliamentary debates on the proposed Turkish-Armenian reconciliation protocols.

ANC spokesperson Arman Musinian dismissed the October 1 public hearings as a performance to garner positive public opinion for the Armenian government. “The goal is not to modify the protocols, but rather to secure their ratification,” Musinian was quoted by the Rosbalt news agency as saying. “The hearings of this ? lapdog parliament will be a mere formality.” The Swiss-brokered protocols, released on August 31, have fueled hopes that the border between Turkey and Armenia would reopen after a 16-year closure.
