General President of Republican People’s Party Deniz Baykal stated that Turkey is the basic foundation for Azerbaijan against the unjust events that make Azerbaijan suffer.

Baykal said, “The operation of occupation that started in 1992 is unacceptable. We closed our borders to Armenia because of that. Opening of borders cannot be point of discussion before end of occupation.”

Reminding that Prime Minister Erdogan said in Azerbaijani Parliament that Turkey will not open borders unless occupation ends, Baykal expressed his content about this stance. He said, “Prime Minister should keep his promise. And we will not let Prime Minister to break his promise. We are pressing about this issue and we will. Government gave signals about this issue. There were different statements made by President and Prime Minister. Now, they are planning to drive us into corner before next April 24. These are wrong policies. We will keep our struggle against these.”

Baykal stated that Republican People’s Party is towards development of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia but that depends on the solution of the conflict between two countries. “Azerbaijan is not important for the stability of only Turkey. It is important for the stability of Europe, European Union, and Balkans.”
